Peninsula

The Halifax
peninsula is dominated by both Commercial Space and Dense Housing Options,
but also has a number of Charming (and not so charming) older houses.
The South End of the Peninsula has traditionally been the most affluent
area, not only on the peninsula, but in fact, throughout all of Halifax
Region. The South End, which surrounds both Dalhousie and St. Mary's University,
is comprised of housing that is typically at least 70 years old, however,
a great number of these homes have been renovated over the years. Additionally,
you will find that a number of these older houses have been converted
to rental properties, primarily occupied by upper year students at the
two Universities. Single Family Homes in the South End Start in the Mid
$300,000 range, and has gone up to $2,000,000 for waterfront Property.
In Recent
Years, the West End has really Emerged as a trendy Area, great for Young
Families who want the convenience of living in the City, but don't want
the high prices of Living in the South End. The West End offers Good sized
homes, in quiet neighbourhoods, and definitely the convenience of closeness
to the downtown business core. There is, in fact, no part of Peninsular
Halifax that is more than 10 minutes away from the Downtown Core by car.
One Other Area of the Peninsula that is really gaining momentum
as a popular and trendy area to live is the Hydrostone area of the North
End. The Hydrostone District, which was completed in the 1920's, is said
to have "risen from the ashes" of the great Halifax Explosion
of 1917. It is a very English Style Neighbourhood, with Tree lined Medians
lining the streets, and compact Row Housing the style which dominates
the Architecture. Located nearby is a charming Row of stores, known as
the Hydrostone Market, which has become a very popular shopping stop.
The Halifax Peninsula Also features a number of New and Old Condo
Buildings, with Prices ranging from the Low $100,000's up through to $1,500,000
for High End Executive Buildings. The most prominent Condo Complexes are
Bishop's Landing, on the Halifax Waterfront, Armoury Square - A new development
on the Halifax Commons (large Park in the Centre of town), Embassy Towers
and Summer Gardens - two popular buildings along Spring Garden Road -
The trendiest Shopping Street in Halifax, and many smaller buildings in
and around the two Universities.
Halifax has maintained a quality of life focus to downtown living,
and with that in mind, the availability of green space for peninsular
residents is great. The Halifax Commons is a large park in the middle
of town, and is located very near Citadel Hill, the historic military
site which overlooks the Harbour. Additionally, Point Pleasant park is
a gem in Halifax's South end, feature acres of walking trails, and hundreds
of people take advantage of it to either jog, or walk their dog along
the ocean on a daily basis. Additionally, there is a well developed public
transportation system in Halifax, with a busy bus service and a convenient
working ferry service which brings residents from downtown to either Dartmouth
Downtown or Woodside terminal.
